Amazon Smile
Good Afternoon
Thank you to all our supporters who use ‘Easyfundraising’ when shopping online, your donations are greatly appreciated. A couple of years ago ‘Amazon’ pulled out of the scheme and set up their own ‘Amazon Smile’ which we have now been able to join, which we are very excited about!
Both schemes are very easy to use, search for them prior to shopping and choose ‘The New Music Makers’ as your charity preference.
If you require any help please don’t hesitate to ask…..Happy shopping!
Best wishes Sarah

Lots of things to say today (make sure you read to the end) but firstly and importantly we have a birthday, it is Percy’s on the 2nd of October. I have hundreds of photographs of Percy because he has been in the choir for hundreds of years and he doesn’t seem to have aged. I was very privileged to sing at his and Jenny’s wedding shortly after I joined the choir. He will have to tell you how long ago.
This Photograph was taken at the village Hall when we did an Old Time Music Hall for the Mayor of Eastleigh to Raise funds for charity. It was a great night.

Hope you and Jenny have a lovely day.
We had our first Committee Meeting (on Zoom) with the new committee since the AGM. It has been put off a few times but finally managed it this time.
The main topic was about returning to live rehearsals. We had a huge debate over the rules and regulations. They were anything but clear and although there is a possibility about going back, multi-use community halls had very vague guidelines. We made a decision, not taken lightly that we would not go back to live rehearsals for the time being as the rate of infection is going up and we did not feel at the present time it would be right or safe to do so.
Following on from the community hall guidelines I have just read this today
- Indoor performances to socially distanced audiences can take place presently if in line with the performing arts guidance. However, as of 28 September community facilities must not allow singing in groups of more than 6, dancing, or music over certain volumes.
That would have saved us a lot of time at our meeting, but I believe we have made the right decision. And I hope that you all agree.

Enjoy Singing ‘something new’ at Home
If you don’t wish to join one of the excellent sing at home courses run by the Self Isolation Choir and Run-by-Singers and would rather work on your own to learn and sing something new this autumn then please do try War Story.
This is a selection of choral works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, interwoven with an original narrative that tells the story of a family living in Cornwall during the First and Second World Wars
WAR STORY was commissioned by ChoraLine in 2019 to celebrate 25 years of providing specialist services to Choral Singers & Choirs.
Listen to the story of Rose and her family
The classic English voice of Martin Muncaster (‘Pathe News’, BBC, ChoraLine Narrator) together with the recording expertise of Lloyd Silverthorne (BBC, ChoraLine Producer) have combined their talents to produce a wonderful recording of the War Story narrative with brief clips :

Six months today lockdown started so it is six months that we haven’t managed to go to choir and still it is unclear whether we are legally allowed to meet now. There was a breakthrough last week and the possibility of us being able to was discussed and now there is doubt from the Culture Secretary saying that we can only rehearse with six people. We are still trying to find out what the situation is and trying to find a location that we can rehearse at. We are trying to keep on top of it for you. I have just heard on the news about a choir saying that they will not be back until after Christmas. It is all very confusing. News update – I have now just heard from Making Music that we can go back!!! But are they right and Culture Secretary wrong?
We have a birthday this week. Rosie Adams is on Sunday 27th September. Rosie is an Alto and joined the choir in September 2013. I have dozens of photographs with Rosie in but she is another one who likes to hide behind people. I hope you have a lovely day Rosie.

This weeks Zoom. Lillian has said that we will be doing Joseph, Cantate Domino, Bond and some Les Mis.
Usual invite to Zoom and similar pattern to last week.

We have two more birthdays this week Eunice Deuchar who is an Alto and joined donkeys years ago. Her birthday is on Saturday 19th. I hope Allan is going to take you somewhere nice and spoil you.

Love this picture of you Eunice. Xx
It is also Rebecca Williams Birthday on Wednesday 23rd. Rebecca has been in the choir a long time as well as a Soprano. I hope Martin takes you somewhere nice as well and the girls look after you.

Happy Birthday Rebecca. Xx
After you’ve recorded yourself, you can send them to me (lillian.sediles@gmail.com) using the website: wetransfer.comSome tips for creating your own video:
- Please set your camera running before you press play on the music and sing along to it.
- Please wear earphones with video in so that your microphone just picks up you. (Ideally earphones – not massive headphones)
- Please stand still for a few seconds after Chris has finished before stopping the tape, rather than as soon as you have stopped singing.
Which room should I film in? Please be in a room with soft furnishings (i.e. living room rather than kitchen), as this helps with sound recording. It helps if your background is at least slightly different to your skin tone. Please consider whether there is anything distracting in your backdrop, eg flags, reflective surfaces, personal pictures, posters etc (a blank background may be your best, safe option – having said that, a few homely touches are nice!). There are too many issues with noise outside so please stay inside.
What should I film with? Use a mobile phone, rather than a webcam, as the cameras are generally superior. A DSLR or camcorder will generally be even better.
Which way round? Generally please shoot landscape.
What about lighting? You probably need more light than you think you need. Natural light is good! Ideally make sure natural light is coming from behind the camera roughly 45 degrees to the line between you and the camera (ie not behind you). One tip: try having the camera on the window sill and face the window. If you have to just use artificial light, try to use whiter lights rather than warmer (orange) lights.
Where should I put the camera? Please make sure you are not holding the camera – either use a tripod, or try putting it on some books / a steady surface. If you visualise the screen as three vertical sections, your eye-line should be approximately a third of the way down the image. If you are standing (as you normally will be) please shoot from approximately the waist up. Have the camera horizontal to your eyes – don’t peer down into it. You may find this video helpful.
Where do I send it? This link. To my email address (lillian.sediles@gmail.com) Please give the files names which describe them eg. the name of the song and your name.

Hope you are enjoying this fabulous weather, 🌞 😎 and lucky those that are on 🏖 holiday.
Speaking of those on holiday it is Beryl Gerrey’s birthday on Thursday and she and Eric are away enjoying this lovely weather and I hope you are getting spoilt. (Not you Eric just Beryl) Eric and Beryl joined the choir in March 2017 and Beryl is in the Alto section.

Have a great day Beryl and if you pop in for the zoom call we will sing happy birthday to you, I am sure you don’t have anything else better to do!!
Thank you everyone that replied to my survey about coming back to choir. Of course that was all before the latest laws were put in place and the 6 people rule. We have been trying to find clarification as to what it actually means to amateur choirs and all of the information is very conflicting even to community halls being able to host us. Making Music said on Friday that as soon as the guidelines are out on Monday they will confirm what it is we are allowed to do, I have only heard that they are still unsure of the rulings and are still trying to get confirmation. If they don’t know, I am not sure how we are supposed to understand it.

Dear Lin
The UK government has reduced the number of people being able to meet socially in a group to 6, from 14 September. However, there is still an open question as to whether music groups would be affected by this or not.
Currently, the list of exemptions from this rule includes sports (indoor and outdoor) and youth activities, but not other community activities, such as music groups.
We have been given to understand that the guidance will be updated by 14 September, so there is a small chance to influence it.
If you feel strongly that music groups should be exempt from the rule of 6, as exercise classes are, then you should write to your MP without delay asking that community arts/community music groups, organised by businesses and charitable organisations, in controlled settings should be exempt from the restrictions on social gatherings, in the same way that sporting and youth activities are.
Here are some of the arguments you might wish to put forward:
- Research has now been undertaken which shows that musical activities are no more dangerous than loud speaking in close proximity; effective mitigations are therefore now possible, in terms of ventilation, face coverings, rigorous 2m social distancing etc.
- Musical group activity creates some of the same benefits as sporting activity does, e.g. on respiratory and immune systems, helping many people who cannot undertake other forms of exercise
- The mental health benefits of group music activity are now proven beyond doubt and are crucial at this time when the nation is reeling from 6 months of pandemic and the prospect of renewed restrictions in the winter, combined with difficult economic prospects; restricting groups again right now would deal a further blow to the mental health of millions across the UK who participate in such activity
- This is formal activity in strictly controlled settings, rigorously risk assessed by a committee of people or similar, or a business owner, responsible for the well-being of participants, undertaken only with risk mitigations in place and enforced
An important note!
It is entirely up to you if you get involved. We believe that it is important that groups are allowed the freedom to risk assess their own activity as it is so varied in terms of participants, settings etc. If you agree – even if your own group is not able or ready to meet in person! – then please do get involved: only voters can persuade their MP to take up an issue. We cannot do that on your behalf.
We are working with Brass Bands England, Association of British Choral Directors, Singing Network UK and others on this.
Please do share this email with anyone you think may find it of interest.
Best of luck,
