WEEK 27 Zoom Thursday 17th September 7.30pm Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81691367380?pwd=RUg4SFNPbnRxbUVwQ1gwb1ZKUWZhQT09 Meeting ID: 816 9136 7380 Passcode: Gold

Hi All

Hope you are enjoying this fabulous weather, 🌞 😎 and lucky those that are on 🏖 holiday.

Speaking of those on holiday it is Beryl Gerrey’s birthday on Thursday and she and Eric are away enjoying this lovely weather and I hope you are getting spoilt. (Not you Eric just Beryl)  Eric and Beryl joined the choir in March 2017 and Beryl is in the Alto section.

Have a great day Beryl and if you pop in for the zoom call we will sing happy birthday to you, I am sure you don’t have anything else better to do!!
I have just heard from Lizzie Kemp that Mary Gunn is in hospital. She had been feeling tired and breathless for some time and eventually ended up in A&E and they have found a problem with her heart and she has to stay in for a heart bypass.  I am sure all of us wish her well and hope she gets better soon.  Thank you Lizzie for letting us know and please keep us informed.

Thank you everyone that replied to my survey about coming back to choir.  Of course that was all before the latest laws were put in place and the 6 people rule.  We have been trying to find clarification as to what it actually means to amateur choirs and all of the information is very conflicting even to community halls being able to host us.  Making Music said on Friday that as soon as the guidelines are out on Monday they will confirm what it is we are allowed to do, I have only heard that they are still unsure of the rulings and are still trying to get confirmation.  If they don’t know, I am not sure how we are supposed to understand it.

So at the moment we are going to carry on with zoom calls.  Last week was our first official choir meet up and we had a few teething problems getting people into the breakout rooms.  This week we have a lovely assistant to help in the form of our Vice Chairman Natalie.   Natalie is going to help Chris with moving people and letting people know if they are unmuted etc.  It would be helpful if you could update your names on your computers with your choir part on them ie (Lin Kellaway Sop). If you are unable to do that I think we are able to. I am sure Eric has done it for some people.  Does anyone have any objections about this being done for you?
Talking of objections, I am now in possession of all of Martins video tapes that he took of the choir and my Chris is converting them into formats that we can use.  There may be occasions that we would like to use some of these for public use, in those days we did not have to ask permission and to be honest I am not sure of the rules now but does anyone have any objections to NMM using images that have been taken during choir performances for general use and publications.  Please let me know if you do.
On the same subject and I am sure Lillian is going to speak about this on Thursday, if you submit a recording for the virtual choir song “Your Raise Me Up” or any further pieces that we do it is done with the understanding that they will be used for public sharing.
If you are interested in submitting a recording please can you do it by the 1st October please.  Again it is not compulsory, just for fun, and if anyone would like help with how to record or anything else let me know and I will find a useful person to get in touch with you – it wont be me!!!  You don’t want to make matters worse by me confusing you.
We will be doing the same song list as last week, Bond Medley, Joseph Medley and You Raise Me up and Lillian will explain tomorrow in what order.
Hope to see you there.

Fwd: [Making Music] URGENT: change of guidance, what can you do?

Reply-To: “Making Music” <info@makingmusic.org.uk>

Dear Lin

The UK government has reduced the number of people being able to meet socially in a group to 6, from 14 September. However, there is still an open question as to whether music groups would be affected by this or not.

Currently, the list of exemptions from this rule includes sports (indoor and outdoor) and youth activities, but not other community activities, such as music groups.

We have been given to understand that the guidance will be updated by 14 September, so there is a small chance to influence it.

If you feel strongly that music groups should be exempt from the rule of 6, as exercise classes are, then you should write to your MP without delay asking that community arts/community music groups, organised by businesses and charitable organisations, in controlled settings should be exempt from the restrictions on social gatherings, in the same way that sporting and youth activities are.

Here are some of the arguments you might wish to put forward:

  • Research has now been undertaken which shows that musical activities are no more dangerous than loud speaking in close proximity; effective mitigations are therefore now possible, in terms of ventilation, face coverings, rigorous 2m social distancing etc.
  • Musical group activity creates some of the same benefits as sporting activity does, e.g. on respiratory and immune systems, helping many people who cannot undertake other forms of exercise
  • The mental health benefits of group music activity are now proven beyond doubt and are crucial at this time when the nation is reeling from 6 months of pandemic and the prospect of renewed restrictions in the winter, combined with difficult economic prospects; restricting groups again right now would deal a further blow to the mental health of millions across the UK who participate in such activity
  • This is formal activity in strictly controlled settings, rigorously risk assessed by a committee of people or similar, or a business owner, responsible for the well-being of participants, undertaken only with risk mitigations in place and enforced

An important note!

It is entirely up to you if you get involved. We believe that it is important that groups are allowed the freedom to risk assess their own activity as it is so varied in terms of participants, settings etc. If you agree – even if your own group is not able or ready to meet in person! – then please do get involved: only voters can persuade their MP to take up an issue. We cannot do that on your behalf.

We are working with Brass Bands England, Association of British Choral Directors, Singing Network UK and others on this.

Please do share this email with anyone you think may find it of interest.

Best of luck,

Tomorrow’s Zoom Call

Hi All (again)
Meant to say on my last email that hopefully we have a new bass joining us tomorrow night. He heard our virtual choir song and wanted to join us so got in touch via the website.
His name is Peter Foster and has recently moved into the area he has sung among with other choirs the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir.

I have waited for the announcements from Boris before I sent out the email.  Firstly thanks to all of those that answered the survey that I sent  out earlier in the week.  It would seem a lot of people would like to go back to choir either in our outside.
Unfortunately after todays announcements it would seem that only six people can meet together.  There were guidelines saying that as many people could join in a choir rehearsal  as long as it was in a Covid safe venue and people were all socially distanced and a risk assessment was put into place.
I certainly have not heard anything that is directly associated with choirs about only being six people but there maybe something at a later stage.  If anyone hears anything different do let us know.
Not everyone did reply to the survey and it would still be interesting to know for when we can go back if you wouldn’t mind replying please.
So till we know more – see you on zoom, and here is my weekly email:-

Hi All

Back to Choir we go even if it is only on zoom after a very long holiday. We have a birthday this Thursday 10th September, Ann Lee.  Ann is a top sop and has been in the choir for a number of years.  Hope you have a lovely day.

So we are back to choir be it only on Zoom for the time being.  This week we will be going through the Bond Medley and the Joseph Medley and also You Raise Me Up our next virtual choir attempt.  I am sure Lillian will tell us when she would like our attempts in by.  We wont be rehearsing for the normal amount of time as I am sure you will all agree it will be rather hard to keep concentrating for that amount of time.  We will have a session in ladies and mens breakout rooms and then have little group breakout rooms for a tea break and then resume again for more singing.

It would be lovely to see as many people as possible, if you have problem logging in let Eric know and he will try and run through it with you.

Hi All
It’s September!!!.   How did that happen.  The last thing I remember it was March!!  But here is a reminder of things to come:-
image1.jpeg
It may have to be two weeks later this year as Santa may have to isolate for 14 days due to travelling the world. 🎄 🎅🏼 🌍
Well our last social zoom call this week, not quite sure what will be going on yet but it will be different!  We may get Roy telling us one of his poems or ditties, he doesn’t know it yet!!!
Thanks Eric for keeping us in touch through our summer break and those people that contributed to quizzes and games and those that joined in.
